Hello Bkhollis and Welcome to MySwissAlps
For travel times use the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on that page.
For Zermatt see http://www.myswissalps.com/ze rmatt. Gornergrat excursion (under the What to Do tab) gets you the iconic view of the Matterhorn. Also see hotels tab.
The best pass depends on you overall itinerary. You should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math.

Basel – Zermatt is easy – I’ve done it several times.
The easiest journey involves just one change of train in Visp (from inter city standard gauge train to the narrow gauge MGB railway).
This is possible every 2 hours throughout the day, starting with the 06.31 departure from Basel (then 08.31, 10.31, 12.31 etc ). These trains are through trains to Brig or Milan, and call at Visp.
Travel time is 2 hours to Visp. The Visp – Zermatt train takes 1 hr 10 min
One of the closest hotels to Zermatt station is the Ambassador which overlooks the outer end of the station, but there is a cluster of hotels around the station square area, all only 5 minutes walk from the station.
The quickest way to see the Matterhorn is to take the Gornergrat railway (starts also by the main station ) – the journey is only 30 mins or so – sit on the right hand side of the train and you will see the Matterhorn for much of the journey.

We did this train trip from Basel to Visp and Visp to Zermatt. We left Basel at 2:30 pm and got to Zermatt around 6:10 pm. The train change was easy even with lots of luggage.
have fun!
