    Hi

We are a family of four hoping to visit the Interlaken area next July. We are trying to keep costs down and instead of flying from London to Zurich and buying a Swiss rail pass I am looking into a global interail pass using Eurostar and stopping en route for more of an adventure. Has anyone travelled through Switzerland with the Interail card? Are there any train restrictions I should bear in mind? What would be the best travel option once in Switzerland in terms of reductions on ferries and scenic train routes etc which I think you get with the Swiss rail card? The Swiss rail is great but we probably would have to buy the eight days and we would like to travel for about 10-12 days. The inter rail card offers that flexibility and seems quite good value.

look forward to any ideas Thanks!

Hi LisaG and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You can check through the coverage area and details for the Interrail Global Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/in terrailglobalpass – be sure to click on the where it’s valid tab for an attraction discount list and the PDF map of routes it covers. Online retailers are listed under the price tab.

If you’d like to compare a few of the rail pass options (Swiss Travel Pass or Interrail Switzerland Pass etc) have a read through our page on how to choose the best rail pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass

In order to do a proper comparison you’ll need to plan out your daily trip itinerary first – but with your plans at the moment (hop on and off on the way to Switzerland as well) the Interrail Global Pass is probably the right rail pass for you in the end.

I find it is cheaper to fly to Switzerland than go by train, especially if you want to stop off. Inter Rail is quite complicated because many European train services (especially Eurostar and TGV) now need advanced reservation and there are specialist allocations for Inter Rail holders, that can be more expensive than buying ‘advance’ type normal fares
