    Hi!

I’ll be in Switzerland from 30 Nov 2018 to 5 Dec 2018 and thought of visiting Schilthorn when we are there. However I saw on the website that the aerial cableway from Stechelberg to Mürren to Schilthorn will be undergoing maintence during this period of time. Does it mean that Schilthorn will be closed to the public and we wouldn’t be able to go up at all? Or are there any other alternative ways of travelling up to Schilthorn? The purpose of our travel there is to see the Swiss Alps and it would be such a disappointment if we wouldn’t get to see it at all.

    Thanks!

Hi Ngxinyi and welcome to MySwissAlps!

The cable car up to Schilthorn is closed for maintenance from Nov. 12 to Dec.6 2018 so you won’t be able to go up the Schilthorn no (it is the only way). http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn/gettingthere

Certainly there are other mountains you can visit though in Switzerland (including ones near Schilthorn in the Jungfrau Region) that you can visit instead.

Have a look through the following link for a list of mountain attractions: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/naturalsites/ mountains – click on the route tab for each mountain page to see notes on closures, if any.

You don’t mention where are you staying in Switzerland, but if you were planning on visiting Schilthorn because it was convenient for your stay, then look at the Jungfraujoch as an alternative: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch

The Schilthorn is not the only mountain in the Swiss Alps!

In fact Zermatt has many more high mountains than the Jungfrau area.

The Gornergrat is in my opinion is much better ride than the Jungfrau as it is mostly in the open not in a tunnel inside the mountain)

Thanks for the suggestion Lucas! Yes I’ll be staying in Lauterbrunnen so I guess Jungfraujoch seems to be the best alternative.

I would be getting Swiss Travel Pass but I see that tickets to Jungfraujoch wouldn’t be free but at a 25% discount instead. How long in advance do I have to book the tickets to Jungfraujoch? And is there a need to print the train tickets out too?

    Hi 1960man!

Yes I saw lots of reviews on Zermatt and I would love to go there too but my planned route of travel doesn’t go around the area ):

The initial plan was Schilthorn so all our accommodations etc was planned around it. Now that Schilthorn is not open, the best plan seem to be to find the next nearest alternative.

    Hi Ngxinyi,

Tickets can be bought on the spot with your Swiss Travel Pass discount or online here (must be printed): http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfraujoch/packages

You could also look at “First” as another mountain option that will be open: http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/grindelwaldfirst/
