Hi, we will be driving from Lake Como to Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken, this Friday, and would like to know what the road conditions are at the moment and likely to be, then? We will be driving the quickest route and keen to know is everywhere passable and if we will need snow chains, as we don’t have them and have no experience of using them…

Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi catssinger, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

The fastest way is via the A2 and the road conditions are good. In the Interlaken area there’s no snow below 1.000 meters. If you’re not planning to drive in the mountains, I don’t think you need snow chains. I’ve never used them, because the ‘normal’ roads are always cleaned. On the other hand I do have winter tyres.

The weather may change quickly, so I would keep an eye on it: http://www.myswissalps.com/we ather/forecast. So far, it looks like 10 degrees with a bit of rain. Like today.

Thank you so much, Chantal, that is very reassuring as that is the route that we are planning to take. Wondering about the winter tyres, now, though……which we don’t have! Thanks for the tip about that site, too 🙂

With the weather forecast for this week you even don’t need winter tyres.

I don’t know what your other plans are in Switzerland, but you may want to have a look at the Swiss Half Fare Card. This rail pass is very suitable for drivers who don’t travel by train, but do take day trips by cable car, boat, etc.

Thanks for mentioning the rail card, Chantal, I was going to ask about trains and tickets in the other forum – can I ask here??

Hi Chantal, the weather still looks ok, to me, for driving without chains or snow tyres tomorrow and Monday – how does it look from where you are, this end of the week? So grateful for all your help.

    Hi catssinger,

I think the weather will be the same wherever we are looking from. 🙂

What site are you using? The A2 to Lucerne does indeed look fine. We use the traffic information here. If there is a pass closure due to snow etc. a detour will be available (sometimes car trains).
