I would appreciate any information regarding the rail system in Switzerland – we are 4 Australian adults (60+) travelling from Venice to Milan then hopefully on to Chur via the Bernese express then thru to Zermatt via the Glacier Express – we will have 5 days to travel and stay at the end of September 2017 – what is the Best way to buy tickets – point to point or should we purchase a rail pass – places/towns to stay overnight – I would welcome any information you can supply

Hi Sheryl and co-travelers and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Usually, people who travel by rail in Switzerland for more than 2 or 3 days will buy a rail pass, and I think that would be beneficial for you as well.

The Swiss Travel Pass allows you to simply hop on any train, bus or boat while in Switzerland – no need to buy any other tickets – and it can be bought online and emailed to you for printing at home.

There are a few routes that are not fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass – read about that (and see a PDF map) here. You must also pay for reservations on the Bernina Express and Glacier Express trains (mandatory for everyone).

You can also plan your trips within Switzerland with the Swiss railways timetable here.

We have a list of most Swiss towns and cities here – you can click on each town and read about what there is to do there and nearby as well as a list of recommended hotels.

If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask!

    Lucas
