My husband and I will stop in Zurich for 3 nights(4 days) at the end of August and would like to visit the beautiful region of Lauterbrunnen during those days. I understand that traveling from Zurich to that region the use of the rail system is highly recommended. I am a little bit confused about the best rail pass that we should buy for traveling consecutively for 4 days between Zurich Airport and that region, going into the mountains, etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you

4 day Swiss Travel Pass is the simplest – ‘go as you please’ except on the higher altitude ‘purely tourist’ lines such as above Wengen and Grindelwald on the Jungfrau line

Hello Balinv and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

As 1960man recommends see Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass) and if you are not happy to just to go with that read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. Be sure to check out the Where it’s Valid tab on the STP page.

Use the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on that page.

This page http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion might also be helpful.

Thank you for your response, I just realized we can actually spend 4 nights/5 days.

How does this change the pass situation ? Would probably look for accommodation in Lauterbrunnen and visit The Jungfrau region.

If you are spending all your time in the Jungfrau region look at http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrautravelpass or http://www.myswissalps.com/re gionalpassberneseoberl and. You will still need to get from Zurich at each end of your visit. The BO Pass gets you to Luzern or Bern. The Jungfrau Pass only works from Interlaken.

We finalized our trip itinerary and it looks like this:

Day 1 – Zurich airport early morning(around 8 AM) train to Interlaken , accommodation for 3 nights in Interlaken

Day 2 and 3 trips to Jungfrau region

Day 4 – Train from Interlaken to Lucerne, accommodation for one night in Lucerne

Day 5 – Early morning train from Lucerne to Zurich airport

Following your advice and looking at the rail passes, it seems that the best combination for us would be a Jungfrau pass and point to point tickets for days 1,3 and 4.

    Am I missing something ?

Do you mean days 1, 4 and 5?

It could be that a Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass and bit.ly/2rkekat) might get you a better price on day 1. It also covers transport up to Mürren, Wengen and Grindelwald if you happen to feel like a bit of a trip on Day 1.

Thank you rockoyster, yes, I meant days 1,4 and 5. You are right about the Saver Day Pass, I will make sure to buy it ahead of time for a better cost.

On Day 1, if weather is good, couldn’t we buy the Jungfrau 3 day pass as we arrive in Lauterbrunnen and use it for Mürren, Wengen, Grindelwald ?

We intend to use the 2 full days(day 2 and 3), weather permitting, to visit Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch with stops in other beautiful places on the route. Any suggestions for a particular combination of sites during those 2 full days ? Any extra tickets we need to buy when covered by Jungfrau pass ?

Many thanks again for helping, this site is wonderful !

Correction to above post: “ On day 1, couldn’t we buy the Jungfrau pass as we arrive in Interlaken (not in Lauterbrunnen) ?

I started to mix towns because after looking at accommodations in Interlaken for those 3 nights, Lauterbrunnen had a much better selection and cost. I suppose using Lauterbrunnen as a base would require a different look at train tickets/passes.

As mentioned earlier “covers transport up to Mürren, Wengen and Grindelwald if you happen to feel like a bit of a trip on Day 1” so it will get you to Lauterbrunnen.

You will still need tickets for routes that are only discounted (as opposed to free) using the Jungfrau Travel Pass. Check the map available at http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrautravelpass/valid ity.

From Lauterbrunnen a very nice circuit to do is to Grütschalp (cable car), Mürren (train), Gimmelwald (cable car), Stechelberg (cable car), Lauterbrunnen (bus). From Mürren you can easily visit Schilthorn and Allmendhubel if you have time. In between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen the bus stops at the Trummelbach Falls. Well worth a look. All these places are searcheable on the MySwissAlps website.

    Enjoy.
