Hi. We planning to drive as the title from 27dec till 3 Jan. I want to know if the road is safe? Is there a road closure during that time? Should we travel by train instead during the time? And i saw in this website says that there is some town that is car free zone. Please advice.

Hi sdsyhs and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Zermatt is car free for a start. You should read this http://www.myswissalps.com/ca rversustrain

I wouldn’t drive – the train system is fantastic and much more relaxing than driving, finding parking, worrying about snow covered roads etc etc. Plus the driver gets to see the scenery that would otherwise be missed while concentrating on the road.

    Hi sdsyhs,

The high alpine passes will be closed but you will be able to get where you need without crossing them or by taking a car train.

That being said, it is much easier and more convenient to travel by train in Switzerland – especially in the winter! If that is something you decide to do, have a look here on our rail pass page to see the options and our page here on how to choose the best rail pass.

    Hi sdsyhs,

How are you getting to Zermatt in the first place?

If I understand it you want to get from Chatillon Saint VIncent to Zermatt. They look close on a map but the Matterhorn gets in the way. It is actually quite a long way. See goo.gl/214rnF

Most people travelling from Italy to Zermatt would go via MIlan and Domodossola which is still a 3 – 4 hour train ride.
