We are flying into Basel on 11 March, then spending 2 days in Basel city centre, before catching train from Basel SBB to Visp (on 13 March). Will be doing return journey on 18 March (Visp to Basel SBB, and then to airport).

Have bought 2 x swiss transfer tickets, but have a few questions:

  • can we use them on the bus from the airport on 11 March, and then again on 13 March (or should we pay separately for the bus, and then validate the ticket on 13 March at Basel SBB?)
  • where do we validate the tickets at Basel SBB - do we need to go to the ticket office?
  • do we need to validate them again (at Visp) on the return train journey on 18 March?
  • can we then use the transfer ticket on the bus back to the airport?

Sorry - this is our first trip to Switzerland, so sorry if these are easy questions !

Paul

Hi Paul,

Let's look into your questions:

  • No, you need to complete each of the two free transfers within one day (see here). You can use it to travel from Basel SBB to Visp on March 13 and Visp to Basel airport on March 18.
  • You can either validate it yourself or you need to go to the ticket office. Which method is required depends on your exact type of ticket. See the page I just linked to for details please. If you're not sure, please let me know from which website you purchased it.
  • No, but you do need to make sure that the date of the return transfer is filled out on the ticket.
  • The bus is included as long as you complete your trip from Visp to the airport on the same day. You can download the map to see what's included.

Enjoy the ride!

Arno

Many thanks for this - really helpful.

Our tickets were bought from the Switzerland Travel Centre, if that helps?

Hi Paul,

The tickets from Switzerland Travel Centre can be validated by yourself. You don't need to go to a ticket office. Simply fill out the empty fields like name, country of residence, passport number and travel date. If you're in doubt you can of course still consult railway personnel, and they will help you out.

Have a good trip!

Many thanks. Final question - can we sit anywhere on the train?

Hi Paul,

With a 2nd class Swiss Transfer Ticket, you can pick any 2nd class non-reserved seat. Reserved seats are exceptional in Swiss trains, so there are plenty of seats to choose from.
