We plan on taking the Golden Pass train from Montreux to Lake Luzern. However, we wish to visit the area of Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Murren. It appears that we should depart the Golden Pass train at Interlaken and take a different train to Lauterbrunnen and then catch the cable car to Grutschalp. Then at Grutschalp take a vintage train to Murren. If we want to go to Grindelwald we take the Schilthornbahn cable car. Is this correct? I wish to thank you in advance for your response. I have spent hours learning about the trains, rail passes, etc. but am unsure about this part of our trip. By the way, this is in July and our first visit to Switzerland.

    Hello sierramuir,

You have the plan correct to get from Interlaken Ost to Mürren.

From Mürren to Grindelwald you can go back the way you came to Lauterbrunnen. Or better, take the Schilthornbahn down to Stechelberg via Gimmelwald. From Stechelberg a bus will take you back to Lauterbrunnen.

From Wengen you can catch a train to Kleine Scheidegg and then across to Grindelwald. Or there is a series of cable cars to take you from Wengen to Grindlewald via Männlichen. From there you can return to Interlaken via Gündlischwand.

Are you planning to do all that in a break in the Golden Pass Line from Montreux to Lucerne? It might be a long day. Incredibly scenic though.

Thank you so much for your reply. We plan on staying a couple of days in one of those towns, not sure which one. We will also each have one piece of small luggage to deal with on all these transportation transfers. Since we do not arrive in Montreux (from Zermatt) until about 11:45 we will probably be catching the 12:28 Golden Pass (Panaromic ??) train so do not have enough time to visit all those towns in one half day. Plus this is a vacation! Any suggestions are appreciated. Which town to stay for at least two nights? Thank you again!

Wengen would be my choice. Easy access from Lauterbrunnen and fabulous views.
