We had planned to be in Lauterbrunnen from June 13–19. Most days there is some rain predicted with either scattered or isolated thunderstorms. We are moderate hikers and don’t expect to be in the upper elevations but we want to keep safe especially from lightning. How do we interpret the forecast as it relates to various elevations and hikes? Is it even possible? Thank you in advance for any help.

    Hi Mkoll,

Weather in Switzerland can change in a minute – sometimes not even according to the forecasts. The forecasts are somewhat reliable for 2 to 3 days ahead of time. June 13–19 is quite far, the forecast can change until then. In the wrong case, be prepeard for a B plan and try to stay flexible. If the forecast predicts thunderstorm, do not hike that day.

I like the MeteoSwiss mobile app, it has great animation for clouds too (also for rain and temperature). I always check it in the early morning, if I am planning to go on a mountain trip. You can also check the webcams on the mountains on your travel day, in the morning.

Wet soil/stones can be very slippery. Make sure to have proper hiking shoes (waterproof) and a raincoat with you.
