    Hello.

I will be departing Wengen on July 10 morning. We fly back to the US from Geneva on a 7am flight on July 11. I’m trying to figure out if we can fit in seeing Montreux on July 10, and if so, should we stay in a hotel in Lausanne or is it better to get to Geneva and near the airport for the night of July 10?

    Thanks.

Hello Skhazel, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Your check-in time should be 5:30 am, but check with your airline. Walking from the Geneva Airport train station to the check-in counter takes about 10 minutes. Based on that I would spend the night in Geneva. Lausanne is closer than Montreux.

You should stay in Geneva for such and early flight

Wengen – Genève via a stop off in Montreux is fairly easy – even leaving Wengen as late as 10.00am and stopping in Montreux for 2 hours you would get to Genève at 17:00

Is this the Golden Pass line that you are recommending?

Yes, Montreux can be reached via the scenic Golden Pass line: http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass.

No, this would be via Spiez, the Lötschberg base tunnel and Visp, then down the Valais and briefly along the shore of Lake Geneva (past Chateau de Chillon) to Montreux.

Via Golden Pass would be about 90 minutes longer (eg dep Wengen 10.33, Goldenpass and 2 hours in Montreux – arrive Geneve around 18.40

Whether the Goldenpass adds anything to your trip depends a bit on what else you will have seen on your trip. If you’ve been in Wengen, it could be argued that you will already have seen plenty of spectacular scenery, but it’s your choice obviously.

Lots of people on this forum want to go via the Golden Pass, but there is plenty to see from the fast train Visp – Montreux in the Rhone Valley, including:

    • castles on rock outcrops around Sion
    • evidence of post glacial geology
    • huge swathes of vineyards on the extensive valley sides
    • the 90 degree bend in the Rhone Valley – a geological oddity
    • etc

Oh that’s good to know! I will research both. We will have small wheeled suitcases (carry on size). Is there a storage or locker facility in Montreux to hold them while we visit?

    Hi Skhazel,

There are lockers and a staffed left luggage office at Montreux station.
