    Could be a chestnut tree, but your photo does no clearly show the leaves.

    Pollarded trees are not uncommon.

    The attached composite image shows some. I recall that the ones by the church are plane trees….maybe.

    I don’t know what kind yours is., either, but, indeed, you’ll see pollarded trees frequently, as you note.

    Hi PnBA and folks,

    I get asked this questions quite often on tour, these trees seem to fascinate people mainly through their “cut” in winter.

    They ARE PLANE TREES!!! Platane in German.

    Sorry Steph but Plane trees are not the only ones you can pollard. This image posted by PnBa is NOT a plane tree.

    Plane trees have a divided leaf. See attached photo.

    This tree (from close up photo of the leaves) could possibly be an elm. I can’t really see clearly from the photo but the new leaf veins look similar but the really distinctive feature is the uneven leaf base (see second photo).
