We are going to be in the Lauterbrunnen / Murren area from May 5 -8. Currently we have reservations in Murren , but I keep hearing that many trails and gondolas might be closed so I am wondering if it would be wiser to stay down in Lauterbrunnen area? n? Would it give us more options for sightseeing and hiking? What would be the benefits of staying up in Murren during the first week of May? Or where would you suggest we make our homebase for hiking and sightseeing during this time?

The trip between Mürren and Lauterbrunnen is a fairly short ride on either of the options. One via Stechelberg,the other via Grütschalp.

Have you considered Wengen? Also a short ride, but no change of “trains” ( transport medium)..

No matter where you stay, the high altitude trails will not be open, especially this year, unless the very heavy snows melt very very early. June 15th is a normal opening date (no promises) for this wonderful easy hike in a normal year with normal snow:

It runs from about 2300 meters elevation to about 2000 meters.
