Hi, my husband and I will be arriving in Geneva (pre 8 days guided tour stay) on 21/7/17. We have 21/7/17 and 22/7/17 before joining the tour group. Thinking of visiting Yvoire or Annecy on 1 day and Vevey and Gruyere on another. Please advise on what public transport is best.

We’ll be in Lucerne (post tour stay) on 29/7/17. Thinking of going to Lugano for a couple of days and then onto Bad Ragaz Resort for 5 nights stay before going to Zurich to catch a flight back to UK. Please advise which rail pass to get? I’m open to suggestions as not sure to visit Lugano or Merano or Lake Como! Or can we visit Lake Como from Lugano as a day trip?

    Thank you.

Hi Yap, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

In Switzerland you travel best by train and mountain transport to get up to the mountains.

You should read “How to choose the best travel pass”. A clearly mapped out itinerary is the basis for deciding which pass suits. Based on your itinerary you need to do the sums based on the cost of all your planned trips on trains, boats, cable cars etc. The page has a spreadsheet to help you.

You can use the Swiss train timetable to work out the fares for any trip. When you go to “buy a ticket” the fare you see on the right hand side of the page will normally be the half-fare price. Double it to get full fare. With a Swiss Travel Pass it is free provided it is shown as free on the validity map which you can download here.

You can visit Lake Como from Lugano as a day trip. Lake Lugano is beautiful too, so I’m not sure if you need to visit Lake Como.

Hi Chantal, I’m having difficulty finding prices for the all the routes by train. Is it because it’s too far ahead? Hence I cannot compare if a Swiss Travel Pass is more economical than point to point as we are not travelling that much.

If we don’t head to Lugano any suggestions to where to go making Luzern as a base for 2 nights before Bad Ragaz.

    Thanks

    Hi Yap,

Two nights is very little time in an area that has enough to offer for weeks. If you skip Lugano I would consider staying in Lucerne longer. That also gives you more flexibility with the weather.

Chantal’s second link explains how to find prices under “How to find ticket prices (advanced timetable)”.
