In Italy we are planning to visit Rome, Florence and Naples. Switzerland – Zermatt, Lucerne and St. Moritz will be our base. Please suggest me which pass will be better. Hi Ishaibs and welcome to MySwissAlps,

Both passes can be a good option for you, I recommend to use the guide with a calculation spreadsheet at http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass. Use the spreadsheet to do the math and to compare the passes.

You’ll find the validity map of the Eurail Global Pass at http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass/validity and the sam info about the Swiss Travel Pass at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity. Both include the train from Zurich Airport to Lucerne.

As you are coming from Italy make sure to read this too: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

Eurail probably best as you will be doing a fair few inter city and long distance runs. You would have to work out if you want to pay for higher altitude mountain railways and cable ways (some are discounted on Eurial some aren’t)

    Hi Isha,

I noticed that you posted the below in a new thread. Please post follow up questions here in the same thread so we have the discussion in one place. Thanks!

    Here’s your post:

    Dear all,
I am traveling to Switzerland and Italy in May with my parents(65 years of age), husband and two kids of 4 & 1 years. I have attached my itinerary in this post and would like to know which rail pass would be the best for me:
    15 days Eurail global pass
    10 days Eurail global pass
    8 days Swiss Pass
    Point to point tickets
    Please guide.
    Thanks,
    Isha

Looking your plans, I think it makes sense to compare the Eurail Global Pass and 8-day Swiss Travel Pass as you did. But the Swiss Half Fare Card might be interesting as well, if you want the lowest overall price. Please note that at least some of your full fare prices are not correct (too low). If go to Ildiko’s first link, you’ll find full instructions on how to do the calculations, and am Excel sheet to help you with that.

    Hi Isha!

Looking at the Swiss part only, an 8 day Swiss Travel Pass would be very convenient. It provides better discounts to mountain tops than the Eurail Global Pass. Those differences aren’t in your overview yet. The price for the Jungfraujoch trip wouldn’t be the same for both options either: the Swiss Travel Pass provides free traveling as far as Grindelwald/Wengen and then a 25% discount, whereas the Eurail Global Pass offers a 25% discount on the entire ride from Interlaken, without any free sections. You’ll find further details at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity and http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass. An overview of discounts per rail pass can also be found on the “Tickets” tabs of each of our attraction pages (http://www.myswissalps.com/activities), such as http://www.myswissalps.com/titlis/tickets. Only if you calculate all trip prices for both passes, and add the rail pass purchase prices, you’ll get a reliable outcome. I can’t really comment on your trips and costs for Italy.

Having said that: I think you really can’t go wrong with either

Discounts for Switzerland may be better with a Switzerland Travel Pass, but then again you may prefer the ease of one travel pass for both countries. I hope that’s kind of reassuring. Both options will be more convenient and cheaper than buying regular full-fare tickets.

Do we know when they are traveling? “May” tends to have changes in transport schedules, such as for cableways, lake boats……
