Hi. We intend to stay in Interlaken and Zermatt for 11 days ( 6/5 respectively). Most of our time will be hiking/exploring around the Jungfrau and Zermatt areas. As the Jungfrau Pass covers us from Interlaken to Jungfrau area then do you think it’s better to get the Jungfrau Pass and Zermatt Pass nstead of Swiss Travel Pass ( fixed or flex ) and just pay for point to point Zurich/Interlaken/Zermatt/Zurich ?

Hi AndyDG, thanks for joining MySwissAlps.com!

If you’re sure you’ll be needing local transportation only, such local/regional passes can be a good option. I personally prefer passes with a somewhat wider coverage area, as weather can force you to change plans; in such cases it’s nice to be able to visit other regions in which weather is better. If you plan to stick to the Interlaken and Zermatt areas, this combination might work:

Overall, a Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass) is the easier solution, as it allows flexible traveling throughout the country. Which option is cheapest for your specific plans, can only be told if you make calculations as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

Does this get you started? Let us know if you have further questions!

The best option is to compare point-to-point tickets against regional pass and Swiss Travel Pass. The spreadsheet is also given on myswissalps.com. Since you will be doing a lot of hiking, you may use a lot of cable cars / gondola. In such case evaluate with Swiss Half Fare Pass also. In case of Swiss Travel Pass you still have to pay for cable car / gondola up to 50% in many cases. You can avail the same benefit in Swiss Half Fare Card

Thanks Annika. This is what we were after. The Jungfrautravel pass is perfect and only need to buy a one way ticket from Zurich to Bern as this pass covers us from Bern to Interlaken. The Advernture Card shows a 50% discount for the cable ways in Zermatt so may be better to get the Zermatt Pass. Will price it all up but again , thanks for this.

    Hi AndyDG,

Personally I would recommend the Swiss Travel Pass if you’re visiting more than 1 region in Switzerland. As Annika suggested in her post, a travel pass with a wider coverage area is more convenient and allows you more flexibility to change your plans according to the weather.

However if you are set on your itinerary and have a fixed plan, best thing to do is compare all the possible travel passes and point-to-point tickets to your destinations, using the spreadsheet suggested by Annika: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass. It will give you an idea which combination works best.

    Regards,

    Anna
