Which town not too far from Zurich for short hikes

    Hello,

I’m going back to Switzerland between 2-7 of July. This time I’m looking at something closer to Zurich, but that still has some nice hikes to do around the area (or maybe 1-1.5 hour train to some nice destinations). But I would still like to be able to enjoy a bigger city with some normal day things like shopping, eating good food etc.

I am thinking of Luzern/Lucerne for this trip. Would you say that this is a good option? 🙂

Or would you suggest another town?

    Kind regards,

    Jonas.

We stayed in Lucerne for five of the eight nights we spent in Switzerland last year; it was great. Only 45-50 minutes by train from Zurich, the train station is across the street from the boat docks, and it seems there are always boats going somewhere on Lake Luzern. The old town part of Lucerne is loaded with shops, bars, and restaurants, plus covered bridges. We didn’t do much hiking during our trip, just walks around Zurich and Luzern, and a few short walks at the top of Mt. Rigi and Mt. Pilatus, both easily accessed from Luzern.

Luzern has a certain vibe. It’s a fun place, plenty of things to do and see in town and around it (e.g. the lake and nearby mountains). Great restaurants with atmosphere especially at night. Zurich, much less so (my opinion).

    Hello Jonas,

I would say Lucerne is the perfect choice for your plan, as it’s no more than an hour train ride from Zurich with direct trains, it offers a wide variety of culture, nature AND hikes/walks in the area and is rather small and beautiful:

    Alternatively look at:

    Best,

    Hi Steph,

Thank you very much for your help! I will take a look at those, and I’m pretty sure that I’ve decided with Lucerne now 🙂 I will take a closer look during the weekend and most likely book everything.

Still havent decided where to go 🙂

Is there another village like 1-2 hours away from Zurich by train (Doesn’t have to be in Switzerland) that offers maybe 2-3 hikes with great views that you can walk directly from the village?

I prefer to be able to start the hikes directly from the village/town and not have to take a train/bus to a specific destination before starting my hikes.

    Hi Jonas,

Rigi Kaltbad is a car free village on Mount Rigi in the Lake Lucerne area, with impressive views and various hiking trails. As it’s on the mountain it does take at least 2 hours to get there, but you’ll then save time as you can walk directly from the village.

For this one, stay in Brunnen or Seelisberg:

Or, stay at a village along the Swiss Path:

Thank you both for those tips!! 🙂

@Slowpoke; If I stay in Brunnen, can I walk all the way up to Fronalpstock from there?

    Kind regards

You might want to start the hike at Stoos, if you wish to try the new funicular up to Stoos.

By the way, the first letter in my name is not “@”

Hehe, I only put the @ in front to like “attention”, I do that at work all the time.

Great, thank you! Booked 3 nights in Brunnen, 2 nights will be in Lucerne 🙂 So my main hikes will be Fronalpstock (all the way from Brunnen) and hopefully a good day at Mt Pilatus.
