Hi, we are travelling to Switzerland in December with our 4 children aged 15, 11 (twins) (all boys) and 8 (girl). We are based in Interlaken for 3 weeks, including Christmas and New Year. It is not a skiing holiday for us, but we’d like to do fun things with the kids. Any recommendations?

Is Maienfeld/ Heidi’s house worth while visiting in Winter?

Where are the best Christmas markets to visit?

    Thanks!

Hi AnneH and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You haven’t said what kind of things you or your kids may like, but I would suggest first looking through our Jungfrau region page for ideas on what can be done in and around the Interlaken area. Certainly the most popular activities in the Interlaken area would be mountain visits, like Jungfraujoch & Schilthorn among many, many others. Panoramic train rides are possible as well, the Golden Pass being the most easily accessible from Interlaken.

I’m not sure how far you are willing to travel from Interlaken? Are you always going to be doing day trips or are you looking to stay elsewhere for a few days? If that is the case check out our what to do page to give you ideas of what can be done all around Switzerland as well.

    Hi Anne,

The Heidihaus is only open between 15 March and 15 November 2017.

    Hi Anne

Alpenrose has kindly linked to my posts about Christmas markets. You can take a direct train to Basel from Interlaken -Basel is one of the largest and Germanic in style. You can travel on the Golden Pass Line via Zweisimmen to Montreux which is our favourite market – French feel so a nice contrast to Basel and has the best food options! You can go to those two any date before 23rd. If you want to go to Einsiedeln you will need to check the dates though as it is operating for a shorter time – we were lucky it fitted in our stay and we really liked that one as well. You may be able to visit the one in Zurich main station on your arrival day as we did last year.

For other activities at that time of year especially after Christmas, search on MySwitzerland.com under events filtering using your dates – we discovered quite a lot going on in Interlaken between Christmas and New Year though we had gone home by then!

    Have fun

    Maggie
