Travelling from Canada next summer. Itinerary is to fly into Zurich, and continue on from airport to the village of Murren for 5 days, then go to Zermatt for 4 days, then probably back to Zurich for 2 nights, and from there on to Luxembourg and home from there.

Want to do lots of walks in both Murren and Zermatt, and wondering if any of the many passes available would be worth it, or if we should just purchase individual tickets as we go?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello Selimagem and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Whether a pass is appropriate depends very much on your individual itinerary. For a visit of such length it is hard to imagine the Swiss Half-fare Card would not save you money. Individual tickets are expensive. Whether the Swiss Travel Pass would be a better deal depends on your plans. Even if you are hiking there will be cable car and train costs involved.

You should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to all the available passes.

In Zermatt you get 50% off the trains and cable cars with a Swiss Travel Pass (see validity map). When you try and plan your days look also at the Mountain pass which you can get for 1 or a number of days. It is discounted with the Swiss travel pass. It’s really convenient as you don’t have to buy individual tickets or be stuck with a certain plan – you can change your mind if you get there and a walk looks a bit boring.

    Hi Selimagem,

Just a quick comment on your itinerary: if you want to see Zurich I’d consider doing so on arrival. Then you can take the quickest route from Zermatt to Luxembourg afterwards, in around 7 hours via Basel.
