    Hi there,

I wanted to run my hiking plan by you all and see if what I’m planning is all possible:

    1) Get a 1 way ticket from Zermatt to Blauherd

    2) Hike part of the 5 Lakes trail to see Stellisee, Grindjisee, and Grunsee, up to a restaurant junction

    3) Make my way up to Gornergrat via the Weg der Still trail

At this point, I’m not sure how tired or not I will be…so leaving myself some options

Add-On 1) Either continue hiking down the Sonnenweg trail to Riffelburg OR buy a 1-way train ticket from Gornergrat down to Zermatt

Add-On 2) Either continue hiking down from Riffelburg, down the Mark Twain Weg trail to Rifferalp OR buy a 1-way cable car ticket from Riffelburg down to Zermatt

Add-On 3) Either continue hiking down from Rifferalp, down the Riffelalpweb trail to Zermatt OR buy a 1-way cable car ticket from Rifferalp down to Zermatt

Also, looking to utilize my Half Fare Card pass if possible.

    Thoughts on this plan?

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

    Hi Jonathan,

If you have energy and time left once you reach Gornergrat, I’d recommend to concentrate on the area between Gornergrat and Riffelalp. That’s where you have the best views because there are no forests. I don’t know what you mean by “Riffelalpweb trail”, but there are easy to medium trails in that area and several stations to board the train down to Zermatt, including Riffelberg (not Riffelburg). Here’s an example: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/rotenboden-riffelalp. The Swiss Half Fare Card is valid everywhere: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isshalffarecard/validi ty.

More details are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/go rnergrat.

    Have fun!

    Thank you Arno!

That sounds great…I think what you’ve suggested is very similar to what I was thinking.

For reference, I was getting the names of the hiking trails from this map that I found..

Do you know if one way train / cable car / gondola tickets can be purchased at the top? or do I have to purchase them at the bottom down in Zermatt town.

    Hi Jonathan,

Ah, I now see that you meant Riffelalpweg. “Weg” mean trails in German. That makes sense. Note that you have a map there showing all transport, but not all cable cars will operate all year round. This applies to Riffelberg-Furi too. Be sure to check the timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. The Gornergrat train does operate all year round. Trails are open in summer usually, but in other seasons there’s no guarantee, so check with the tourist office if needed.

Train tickets can be purchased at any station, or online: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/switzerland /price.
