The Blauherd-Rothorn cable car had to be taken out of service because of ground movements. As an alternative, guests can take the cableway to Sunnegga.

The tower 1 of the cableway was built on permafrost soil which is gradually thawing out because of the warmer temperatures. This leads to an unstable foundation. As a result of these ground movements, the safe operation of the Blauherd-Rothorn cable car is currently not ensured. Geologists, civil engineers and specialists from the cableway construction company are currently working out possible measures to restore the lift. Various ways of tackling the repair work have already been put forward. Whichever scenario is selected, comprehensive construction work is necessary.

Therefore, the Blauherd-Rothorn lift will not be operating summer services in 2018.

Thanks for sharing that here Rockoyster. Sad news. It won't be the last one I'm afraid. I don't think it's the first one either. I recall the Lagalb cable car at the Bernina Pass being out of operation for a few years for the same reason, but it's open again in winter. Hopefully they can come up with a solution for the Rothorn before the winter season.

Sad indeed.

The funicular to Sunnegga is not terribly scenic in and of itself (in the mountain partially) but the views from Sunnegga are great (including the Matterhorn)!

Is the trip to Klein Matterhorn affected by this cable car system?

So is the Sunnegga to Blauherd section still operational ?

ie, access to the start of the Five Lakes Walk, Blumenweg, Marmot Trail, etc...

Is this the section the article refers to when it says, quote <<the cableway connection to Sunnegga is not affected and recommended as alternative for customers >>

Thanks.

Helen.

You can still get to Blauherd, yes.

The article that Rockoyster linked to states it is closed from Blauherd to Rothorn only.
