I want to know on the basis of this itinerary which rail pass will be suitable for us. Also will Zermatt be too cold in the first week of October?.

All my accommodations are paid and we will be preparing our own food at the apartment hotels we have booked. Will 250 CHF per day be sufficient for this tour. I plan to carry 3100 CHF for this entire trip. Your advice will be highly appreciated.

Also any other mountain we can cover from Lucerne?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Harishparekh,

In October there will be a reduced schedule for the boats on Lake Lucerne, so you might want to add other activities on that day too. You can find some xample here: http://www.myswissalps.com/lakelucerne/activities. You can also visit Stanserhorn (http://www.myswissalps.com/stanserhorn) from Lucerne.

It will be already colder during October, the average temperature is somewhere between 2 and 11 C according to a weather forecast page, I’ve just checked. Make sure to bring warm clothes with you. the best advice for any season is to dress in multiple layers. That allows you to adapt quickly when the weather is changing throughout the days or when you visit higher areas. You also want to have a raincoat. Read more: http://www.myswissalps.com/weather and http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit.

Note, that usually hotels do not allow cooking in the hotel rooms but if you have a rented apartment with a kitchen you are free to use it.

Regarding the rail pass, as you are going to visit different regions, I recommend the Swiss Travel Pass. Have a look at the
validity map: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity. You can buy the Swiss Travel Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price. You can calculate your transport costs with the help of our calculation spreadsheet: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

If you already paied for the accommodation and you already have your rail pass and you are not going to restaurants then yes, I think that 250 CHF should be enough. But to make sure, you should make calculations, so you can see how much extra you have to pay for transportation. At http://www.myswissalps.com/plantrip/doityourself/savemoney you’ll find some money saving tips.

Credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted, so there is no need to have large amounts of cash at hand. You can pay larger amounts by card and take along some cash for smaller payments and places that do not accept cards. Learn more: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfranc.

Make sure to reserve your seats in advance for the Glacier Express, you can do it here: http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/tickets. Note, that if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you do not have to buy any tickets but you still have to reserve your seats in advance for a fee.

    I hope this helps,

    Ildiko

If you have already booked you accommodation then you will have to come prepared for cold at altitude. You ask if Zermatt (c.1600m asl) will be cold, but you should also know that St Moritz is 1800m asl – and Grindelwald is just over 1000m asl. Therefore three of your bases are over 1000m altitude.

Of more concern to me is that you are doing quite a lot on every single day, non stop. I highly recommend you add in some slower and / or rest days. You are planning to visit no less than seven high mountain top destinations (and asking about fitting one more in…). There is a valid argument that once you have been to one or two high altitude mountain tops you have ‘seen them all’. I would consider dropping one or two.

Another thing I would question is the direction of your itinerary which is somewhat illogical as it includes some zig zagging.

An alternative (‘smoother’) circuit would be: Zurich – St Moritz – Zermatt – Grindelwald – Luzern – Zurich.
