    Hello;

I’m planning a trip to Zermatt in mid-November, will be leaving by train from Lugano. I have made hotel reservations for that night and have to return to Milan the next evening as my return flight leaves from Milan on the next day. I want to make the best use of my time in Zermatt, on the afternoon of my arrival and next day. My questions:

    1. From what I gathered, it seems that the shortest route takes me through Milan to Brig and takes a little over 4 hrs? Is this the shortest route? It seems that there are a few options, some taking a little longer? I want to arrive Zermatt the earliest, but I want to know if taking a different route that is more scenic or has options such as not to be missed town to stop at. Any suggestions…

    2. If I leave around 10 am I should be arriving Zermatt around 2-3 pm. I plan to go to Gornergrat the next day morning, so after arriving and checking in at the hotel, I have the rest of the afternoon free. I read about the Gorner Gorge but it seems any tours going there are guided only? What activities do you suggest I could do this afternoon around Zermatt? Or any other Any hiking suggestions that I have time to do this afternoon? My friend is not very adventurous so other options besides hikes would be appreciated.

3.The other mountains in the region, Harder Kulm, Kleine Scheidegg, are these options to visit that afternoon after I arrive from Lugano?

    4. I’m planning the trip to the Gornergrat in the morning… timewise, do I have time to do anything else on that day before having to head back toward Milan? Suggestions…

    Thanks!

    Please disregard #3 😁. I mistakenly mixed up Jungfraujoch mountains 🤣, I know it’s a different region.

You are taking a big chance with the weather as you surely know. We were three nights in Zermatt and the mountain was clear for about 4 hours: we lucked out to see it while on the Kleine Matterhorn cable.

The Gorner gorge does not require a tour! There are numerous hiking trails all about, including looping around the gorge and up, then back down to Zermatt. You can take the cable car to Furi and walk to the Suspension Bridge then down to town. (Not sure if “not adventurous” is the same as sedentary.)

If you arrive by 2-3, you can do the Gornergrat that day as I just checked and the last train up is 5:05, and down at 5:42.

Then you can do Kleine Matterhorn the next day. This assumes good weather of course.

    Enjoy!

Thank you for your feedback! One more question, is there a better chance of clear skies at Gornergrat or Klein Matterhorn in the morning or afternoons? Comparing one versus the other which trip and sightseeing on top of mountain takes more time and things to do? Would I have enough time to do Gornergrat, Klein Matterhorn and Gorner gorge? (I have Sunday afternoon after arrival and Monday through evening before taking train to Milan). In your opinion, what is more of a not to be missed of things to see/do in Zermatt? Thanks in advance!

    Kind regards,

    Brenda

Every day will be an adventure in terms of weather!

When you arrive, check the live webcams for the Gornergrat (conveniently right at the train station). If it’s clear, I would go immediately. (Gornergrat is opened much later than Kleine Matterhorn.)

If it’s socked in (as it was when I went up), do the gorge and some hiking.

The two peaks will have similar weather patterns I believe. If it’s nice the next morning, you can do the Kleine Matterhorn with hiking options. You can do both in one day as well depending on your energy.

The gorge is nice but can be easily skipped in favor of the summits. I only went because of the weather! But just hiking above Zermatt is lovely.

    Enjoy!
