    Hi guys,

So I have a question about the scenery from Zermatt to Andermatt by train or car. Based on other posts here it seems like for GEX, the scenery from Zermatt to Andermatt is the same by GEX or train, but how about versus driving the car? My family will be driving a car since we start our trip from Frankfurt, and we are wondering whether we should let my mom and sister be on the GEX, while my dad and I be on the car and pick them up at the Andermatt station, or just all travel by car (parked at Tasch). Based on research it seems like the best part of GEX is Andermatt to St. Moritz, but since we want to visit Lucerne, Stoos funicular, Zurich (maybe), and stay at hotel in Vaduz during that day, it seems very hard to do that train route.

    Current tentative plans:

    Day 1: Colmar – Bern – Blausee – Grindelwald

    Day 2: Jungfraujoch – Wengen

Day 3: Golden pass to Montreux – Zermatt

Day 4: Zermatt – Gornergrat (Matt horn)

    Day 5: Zermatt – Lucerne – Stoos – Zurich (maybe) – Vaduz

Day 6: Vaduz – Germany (Neuschwanstein, Konigssee)

Any tips would be gladly appreciated!

Hi Chrosno12 and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

    Nice itinerary you’re sharing here.

Regarding your question. You can drive practically the same route as the train does by car. Use the first following link for car route details and the second one to see the train route:
    http://www.viamichelin.com
    http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress/gettingth ere (map)

If you drive all the way on the same route you will drive quite some mountain roads, curves and passes and you must decide yourself if you’re ok doing this. Make sure you read these links:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/ca r/drivinginthemountain s
    http://www.myswissalps.com/ca r
http://www.alpen-paesse.ch/en/ (to check if passes are snow free and open)

You can also drive partially and then use on of the “CarTrains” from Oberwald to Rehalp near Andermatt. See:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/ca r/cartrains

Hope this supports your decision. Maybe someone else has input to share too.

    Best,
    Steph

Note first that ZermattLuzern– Stoos – Zurich– Vaduz is impossible in 1 day. You would not have time to stop and look at anything, so it would be pointless travelling via Luzern

If you have a car for the whole of your holiday there is no real point in some people travelling on the train on the ‘Zermatt and Furka – Oberalp’ route (ie Zermatt – Brig – Andermatt – Chur) (by the way the GEX is train so the phrase ‘GEX or Train’ doesn’t apply.)

The drive from the Zermatt valley to Andermatt and on to Chur is a classic Alps road trip – traversing the Furka and Oberalp passes – you will actually see more from a car than the train since the train goes underneath the Furka in a deep tunnel opened in the 1980s (which is why the Glacier Express no longer passes the Glacier it was mainly named after (the Roine Glacier)
