Hi Rsteiger and welcome to MySwissAlps!
You can take a train from Brig to Lugano via Domodossola. You can find exact details and schedules when searching on the Swiss railways timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable
It is a nice scenic trip, especially between Domodossola and Locarno on the Centovalli Express: http://www.myswissalps.com/ce ntovalli.
Hi Rsteiger
You will need four trains for the Brig to Lugano journey, but they are all scenic and dovetail together well. I find that changing trains adds to the fun and interest.
Brig to Domodossola is a short journey through the famous Simplon tunnel. It emerges into a high mountainous part of Italy before dropping steeply to Domodossola.
At Domodossola you will change from standard gauge to narrow gauge for the Centovalli line. The platform for this is under the main platform, and is well signposted. This train takes about two hours and is quite spectacular both in its scenery and engineering. You may have to pay a small supplement – in May it was CHF1.50 – for the panoramic carriages. You pass from Italy back into Switzerland for the remainder of your journey about half-way on this line.
At Locarno, the terminus, you will switch back to standard gauge for Lugano, but will need to change at Giubiasco. These last two legs are short, about 20 mins and 30 mins.
