    Hi there,

my Husband and I will be traveling in Switzerland inSept 2023 . Part of our holiday involves traveling from Zermatt to Milan.

As we are crossing borders from Switzerland to Italy ,

    1. Do we just buy 1 ticket that gets us from Zermatt to Milan or do we buy ticket to the border , and then another ticket to Milan ?

    2. what happens at the border ? Do customs/immigration officers get on the train to check passports ? We hold New Zealand passports.

i do apologies if these questions have been asked numerous times …

    regards

    Sew

    Hi Sew,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

In general, you can buy a point-to-point ticket Zermatt to Milan either online or from the train station. You can find further information here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy/price

Switzerland is not part of the EU but it is part of the Schengen Agreement which allows free movement. This also applies to non EU once you’re in the region. So there are no routine passport check when you cross the border to Italy. However border police and ticket conductors may randomly ask for IDs and valid tickets on the trains.

    regards,

    Anna

    Hi Sew!

Will you be using a rail pass when traveling from Zermatt to Milan? In that case the first leg of that trip (up to Domodossola) may be discounted or even for free. In case you’re still figuring out whether a rail pass makes sense for your plans, this page may be useful: https://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

    Hi again,

if I have a Swiss Half fare card , and I am a senior ( not sure if I get any discount on being a senior) – when I buy a ticket from Zermatt to Milan, say for example I chose a time at 8 am,…does that mean I can only go on the 8am train ?

    Thanks

    Sew

A normal ticket bought with a Swiss half fare card can be used at any time on any train within Switzerland (that is up to Domodossola on your route).

The Swiss do not give discounts for seniors

    Hi Sew!

Unfortunately there are no senior discounts: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/discounts. So you can just buy regular 50% discounted tickets with your Swiss Half Fare Card. Here’s how it works:

Normal tickets are valid all day. Be cautious with Supersaver tickets though. Those are only valid for a specific train and departure time. They’re explained at https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerland.
