Hi Swede4life,
Seat reservation is required for Glacier Express. You can find more information here: http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/tickets
Seat reservations on the Golden Pass is not required but recommended on the popular Zweisimmen – Montreux stretch. Similarly, you don’t need a seat reservation on the Regio Express Lötscberger.

Anna

For the trip Zermatt to Wengen you do not need to take the Glacier Express or the Golden Pass. The Glacier Express runs between Zermatt and St. Moritz. For the short section from Zermatt to Visp just take one of the “regular”(regional) trains. For this you do not need a reservation. The same for the section of the route, Spiez to Lauterbrunnen. The Golden Pass route is from Montreux to Luzern. Glacier Express and Golden Pass are names used from marketing the scenic routes. From Zermatt to Wengen we usually take the route via Kandersteg (all regional trains). It takes a little longer but is very scenic. Have a wonderful trip.

Hi Swede4life! In addition to the helpful answers you already received: seat reservations are usually not necessary for Swiss trains. It’s explained at http://www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations. They’re only required for some special panoramic trains. Regular non-panoramic trains for which reservations are not required are available on those routes too. You do miss out on the extras of panoramic trains in that case. The differences are explained under “Regular trains versus….” at
