Here’s the itinerary I’ve worked out, using the SBB website, for our 9-day, summertime trip to Switzerland. All this is perfectly hypothetical to me, since I’ve never used the trains. Can someone double-check me to see if I’m doing something stupid, travelling at a stupid time, missing out on good scenery, or trying to do something impossible?

Would this itinerary justify a pass?

Do I have all the information I need to find the correct train? I was a little confused by seeing things like “IR70” and “2639” for a train route.

    Zürich to Luzern:

    • TUE 1035 – Zürich Hauptbahnhof – Plat 10 Dep Train IR 70 – 2639 Direction Luzern
    • TUE 1125 – Luzern – Platform 5 Arrive Station

    Luzern to Interlaken:

    • WED 1706- Luzern – Platform 12 Departing Train IR- 2934 – Direction Interlaken OST
    • WED 1855- Interlaken Ost – Platform 4 Arrive Station

    Interlakent to Montreux

    • SAT 1800 – Interlaken Ost – Platform 5 Departing Train IC 61 – 10982 – Direction Basel SBB
    • SAT 1821 – Spiez – Platform 2 Arrive Station – Transfer
    • SAT 1836 – Spiez – Platform 3 Departing Train IC 8 – 826 – Direction Brig
    • SAT 1902 – Visp – Platform 7 Arrive Station – Transfer
    • SAT 1906 – Visp – Platform 6 Departing Train IR 90 – 1732 – Direction Genèvé-Aéroport
    • SAT 2014 – Montreux – Platform 1 Arrive Station

    Montreux to Zurich

    • TUE 0847 – Montreux – Platform 1 Departing Train IR 90 – 1810 – Direction Genèvé-Aéroport
    • TUE 0910 – Lausanne – Platform 8 Arrive Station – Transfer
    • TUE 0915 – Lausanne – Platform 7 Departing Train IC 5 – 1517 – Direction St. Gallen
    • TUE 1130 – Zürich HB – Platform 34 Arrive Station

    Your itinerary certainly looks correct.

If using the SBB timetable here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable you simply plug in the to/from towns and it gives you the proper connections, so no need to worry about that.

Also not to worry about train numbers either “IR 70-2639” it has no bearing on your travel, except to note you will be on an Inter-Regional train – which can be interesting to train fans I suppose!

I’d suggest leaving Interlaken earlier on the Saturday (if possible) and taking the Golden Pass route to Montreux via Zweisimmen. It will take longer, but the section between Zweisimmen and Montreux can be taken on Panoramic cars. https://www.myswissalp s.com/goldenpass

    Hi Joshua,

Train types are explained on http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/traintyp es, but as Lucas said that’s not relevant to getting from A to B.

A perfectly correct itinerary – all standard connections as is the idea of the Swiss interconnecting ‘taktfahrplan’ regular interval service.

IC8, IC61 etc are the new route numbers recently introduced, designed to help passengers identify standard intercity routings (eg IC61 is the Basel – Interlaken – Basel service). Other longer numbers (eg 826, 1810) are the individual train reporting numbers but not really necessary to understand these for irregular travel

    Hi Lucas,

Pertaining to the section between Zweisimmen and Montreux, I should be grateful if you would advise me of the way to do seat reservations. I will have a Swiss Travel Pass and the trip will be from Zermatt to Montreux on 25 June morning.

    Thank you!

    Gordon
