My husband and I are traveling to Switzerland in late August 2023. Our preliminary itinerary has us in Zurich two nights, Montreux three nights, Lauterbrunnen three nights, Lucerne three nights, ending in Lugano four nights. We will be traveling by train, except for Lugano. We will rent a car there to explore Ticino (we have Swiss Italian roots and we wish to spend the most time there) We would appreciate any insights. This looks good. The train routes flows well with minimum switchbacks. Are you planning to travel on the Golden Pass route from Montreux to Lucerne (via Lauterbrunnen)? From Lucerne to Lugano, you can complete part or full journey on the Gotthard Panorama Express route (http://www.myswissalps.com/gotthardpanoramaexpress/gettingthere).

You might want to consider getting a railpass to cover your train journey. There is currently a Spring promotion on the Swiss Travel Pass, offering 2 extra travel days when you purchase an 8-day pass. You could use pass for free unlimited travelling for the first 10 days of your trip. Anna, Thank you for the quick response. Yes, we are planning on traveling on the Golden Pass and possibly the Gottardo Panorama Express. Another question: our flight home leaves Zurich at 13:10 on Saturday September 2. Could we safely leave Lugano on an early morning direct train in time to make the flight? Or should we be cautious and arrive in Zurich the evening before?

Hi LC13,

There are regular fast train services between Lugano and Zurich. If you have an international flight to catch at Zurich Airport, be sure to allocate enough time for baggage check-in and security check. I did a quick timetable check: there is a 0730 train connection from Lugano that will get you to Zurich Airport at 0944. You only need to change train once (in Zurich HB). You can use the SBB timetable to check other suitable connections: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable
