Hi! My best friend and I will be traveling from Vienna to Zurich on 1/8 to 1/13/19. We are originally from Los Angeles.

Can you please help us make the most of our trip. We plan to take the most scenic train route to go to St Moritz from Zurich.

We plan to stay at St Moritz for 3 nights and take the train to Lucerne for another 2 nights before we head back to Zurich on 1/13 to fly out to Brussels.

I would appreciate any help regarding accommodations as well and also best time to travel by train and route.

    thank you so much!!!

Zürich – St Moritz: your route would be:

Zürich – Chur (SBB main line inter city train)

Chur – Thusis – Filisur – St Moritz (metre gauge Albula Railway – the whole Chur – St Moritz line is World Heritage Site) operated by Rhätische Bahn (RhB)

    St Moritz – Luzern:

    St Moritz – Albula – Reichanau Tamins – Disentis/Muster – Andermatt – Göschenen – Erstfeld – Luzern

    thank you so much!

Hi CJPark and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You can use the Swiss railways timetable to plan out the trip and find duration: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable – it always gives you the most direct route by default.

I’d really only consider the direct route via Chur going to St. Moritz.

On your way to Lucerne you can travel via Andermatt as 1960man notes, or via St. Gallen. The fist option may be the more scenic choice if you have the time.

You can find a list of accommodations we suggest in those towns on the following links, as well as ideas on what to do there (if they hasn’t been decided).

Actually, my friend and I decided to take Brussels out of our itinerary so from Vienna to Zurich on 1/8. We are staying in Switzerland for 7nights and 8days (1wk).

Which scenic train route should we go aside from St Moritz, Lucerne and Montreux? Or do you have other recommendations to stay and take the train?

Should we buy the eurotrail pass?

    Hi CJPark,

You can see a list of the official panoramic trains in Switzerland here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/scenictrips/t rain – the route tab on each web page will show you were they travel to and from and help you build an itinerary around those trips if that is what you want.

I would argue that all train trips in Switzerland are scenic. What is it you want to see and do while in Switzerland? Are there mountains and towns you want to visit or do you simply want to take as many panoramic trains as possible?

You will have to set your itinerary first, before you can decide which rail pass will make the most sense for you. Have a read here for more help on choosing the best rail pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass

We are planning to stay at St Moritz then Lucerne and Montreux and train to Paris. Should we buy a eurotrail pass? Will it be more cost efficient? And can we use it for train ride from Prague to Vienna as well?

    Hi CJPark,

You can see the coverage areas and routes for the Eurail Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/eu railselectpass/validit y – you can use it for several countries but you must select them when buying the pass (the more countries the more expensive the pass).

If you aren’t taking more than 1 or 2 trains in each country, point to point tickets may be the cheaper option. http://www.myswissalps.com/tr avel/toswitzerland/tra in/tickets

Then get a dedicated Swiss rail pass, like the Swiss Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass

As for which pass is the most cost efficient…as I noted on my last post, you need to set your daily itinerary first, and then check ticket costs against rail passes that you are considering. The link on my last post will help guide you through that process.
