Hi, we (three of us, incl a 4-yr-old) are visiting Switzerland in mid-June and need some advice on two things: Is it necessary to book a guided tour for Zurich city or can we do it in our own (keeping in mind that we hav a kid with u?

Also, is the Golden Pass line the only option to travel from Interlaken to Montreux? If yes, then how do we go about the ticket reservation? Will the travel pass help in any way?

    Thanks in advance

HI sumitsg79 and welcome to MySwissAlps!

I think you can explore Zurich on your own in general but it depends on if you are looking for a guide to tell you more history etc about the areas.

We have some tours listed on our Zurich activities page here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/zurich/activitie s & a self-guided walking tour on that page as well (listed under hiking suggestions).

There are 3 routes to Montreux from Interlaken:

    • Via Visp
    • Via Bern
    • Via Zweisimmen (Golden Pass route)

A rail pass like the Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass)covers all 3 routes (the last 2 are both very scenic). Reservations are not needed on any of those routes but travel between Zweisimmen and Montreux on the panoramic trains can get busy so you might want to reserve: https://www.myswissalp s.com/goldenpass/packa ges

You’ll want to use the “via” options, in the “advanced” timetable.

This map is helpful, because once you zoom in to zoom level 32, the rail lines pop up.

    Tks.

One more thing – is it possible to just hop on to a train to go from Interlaken to Montreux with a Swiss Travel Pass or do we have to reserve a seat in advance, considering that the journey is on the Golden Pass route?

Yes, it is possible, as reservations are not compulsory.

However, the sector between Zweisimmen and Montreux is very popular, due to the scenery and panoramic windows. As there are two of you and a child, if you want 3 seats together, including a couple of window seats, and want to travel on the panoramic train, I would recommend you reserve the Zweisimmen-Montreux sector. If you want a separate seat for your child, you also need to reserve a seat for them (at the same price as for the adults).

    You can do that here:
