Hi. I am going to visit Zurich in 2 weeks. I am traveling with 2 kids. We will be staying there for 2.5 days. I am hoping to visit Pilatus one day and the other day is open. Maybe interlaken. I am not sure if I should book a trip through an agency or get a 3 day swiss family pass. If I take a family pass ticket, is it easy to navigate trains and buses.? The only issue with booking a trip through Viator is time limitations. Therefore, I am leaning towards a swiss pass. I have following questions

    1. With swiss pass, I dont need any reservations to local trains? Just board on and show pass. Right?

    2. For pilatus trip, where can I buy tickets for golden trip? Seems like I can’t get them online. Can I get them on Ferry/boat to Pilates? Also how do I get to boat once I get to Luzerne train stations?

    3. If I want to take a local train to interlaken or Bern what can I do there besides walking around? Are there any special places to visit there?

    4. Any suggestion for local sight seeing in zurich and lucerne, max 2-3 hrs

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Sehrr300,

    1. Correct. You can buy the Swiss Travel Pass here for each adult: https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass/ price – you then need to order at the same time the Swiss Family Card for the kids (free travel everywhere). https://www.myswissalp s.com/swissfamilycard
    2. Your Swiss Travel Pass covers the boat trip so no ticket needed. When you arrive at Alpnachstad you can buy discounted tickets at the station there for the round-trip up to Pilatus.
    3. What are you hoping to do? Bern is a city visit but there are many outdoor activities to do around Interlaken if that is your interest: https://www.myswissalp s.com/interlaken/activ ities
    4. We have a list of recommended activities to do in Zurich and Luzern noted here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/zurich/activitie s & https://www.myswissalp s.com/lucerne/activiti es

    Thanks Lucas.

Just curious. If I want to buy individual or round trip tickets, is the price same for kids and adults? Do kids travel free or get any discounts if traveling with parents?

Also where can I get boat schedules for lake zurich and lake luzerne?

    Thanks

It depends on the kids ages.

Under 5 are free. 6 to 15 are 1/2 price on point to point tickets. See more options here: https://www.sbb.ch/en/ travelcards-and-tickets/tickets-for-switzerland/children.h tml

You can find schedules for the boats on our boat lake pages:

Why not spend the two and a half days in the Zurich area?

There are some wonderful things to see and do. And on local transport (ZVV) tickets.

What you’re planning, especially with a family, sounds like something of an endurance test.

    Just a thought.

All the resources you will need for whatever option you choose are on this site on in links therefrom.

But, whatever you choose, enjoy your travels!

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I agree with you and feel getting a Zurich city card and doing local things is a better idea.

On 2nd day, I want to get single train ticket to lucerne , I can get a pilatus ticket from boat. My only question is how will I get back to lucerne from Krines. I know there is a bus that brings you back to Lucerne. Where can I get a bus ticket for that route? Can ZVV ticket be upgraded to cover that bus route or train to and from Lucerne? If not, can I just pay cash for that bus? And is it easy to get to lake Lucerne boat from Lucerne train station? How far is it?

Regards . Thanks a lot for your help.

It’s a long time since I did the trip, but there is a trolley bus that runs from Kriens back to Luzern. Part of the “round trip” so, no doubt, others would be doing it too.

The ZVV ticket won’t take you to Luzern.

Others can advise on the best option for your Luzern trip using the Zurich area as a base.

I just realised that Golden pass ticket includes the bus from Kriens to Lucerne. Am I right?

There isn’t a “ticket” for that route. It is just the name of the round-trip you can do to reach Pilatus from Luzern.

Golden Round-Trip (not Golden Pass – that is the name of a train to Montreux from Lucerne).
