Hi everyone,

We are travelling to Switzerland for 6 days on September. We’re a family of 4 with 2 young kids from NZ. We will be arriving in Zurich via train from Paris.We would like to visit Bern, Lucerne, Interklaken and Lauterbrunnen areas and flying out in Zurich. Whats the best place to stay as base? Not sure if its a good idea to stay one night in Bern, one night in Lucerne and the rest in Lauterbrunnen/ Interlaken? Thoughts & suggestions much appreciated! 🤗

Welcome to MySwissAlps.

It’s great that you are planning a family trip to Switzerland. Based on your interests, I think it’s best to choose a central base so you can plan day trips easily to all the destinations on your list. I think Lucerne would be an ideal base. It has everything – lakes. mountains and historic old towns. Also, it’s no too far from Zurich (about 50 mins), Bern (1 hour) and Interlaken + Lauterbrunnen ( 1.5 to 2 hours). So there is no need to move from one hotel to another every day.

Lucerne has regular train services to Zurich, Bern and Interlaken, therefore planning trips should be easy. You can use the SBB timetable to check train schedules: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

From Lucerne, I recommend you take the Lucerne-Interlaken Express that travels along a section of the Golden Pass route. You can find the details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere. From Interlaken, it’s just a short train ride to Lauterbrunnen. This can easily be done as a day trip.
