I and a companion arrive in Zurich airport, travel to Vitznau and stay in Vitznau for four days and then travel to milchsee-frutt for two days and then go back to Zurich airport. Is this something we can do by public transportation (train, bus, boat, cable car, etc.)? Which rail pass should we purchase (Tell Pass, Swiss rail or something else)?

Tell Pass covers all your holiday area is valid as far north as Zug.

Zug is a main stop on the main line railway between Zurich and Luzern, so your best bet would be to buy an ordinary train ticket Zurich – Zug and have the Tell Pass already valid (buy online print at home) , so you would take a Zurich – Luzern express train and once past Zug your Tell pass will be your valid ticket (you can stay on the same train)

Just to clarify – in order to do that your Tell Pass would need to be valid on all the days of your trip including the days you travel to and from Zurich

Hi Jmhr and welcome to MySwissAlps!

See a PDF map of the Tell Pass coverage area and how to buy it online here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/tellpass and use the Swiss railways timetable here to find train schedules and routes: https://www.myswissalp s.com/timetable

To know which rail pass is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂
