Fiescheralp-Riederalp: the facts

  • Hiking time: 2h00
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Elevation: 1879 – 2296 m
  • Distance: 7.5 km
  • Terrain: meadows and forests around the tree line
  • Region: Upper Rhone Valley (Valais)

About the trail

During this hike, you will gradually descend from just above the tree line to just beneath it. This is a typical winter sports area, with lots of chalets. There are great vistas along the way. You can end your hike sooner in Bettmeralp, by taking the cable car down to the train station of Betten.

You will not see the Aletsch glacier during this hike, but there are several options to break your hike by taking a cable car up to enjoy the great view of this glacier: the Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn are perfect places to do so.

How to travel back from Riederalp

From Riederalp, a cable car takes you down to the train station of Mörel. You can take the train to Fiesch/Oberwald or Brig from there.

The hiking route

  • The cable car takes you to the winter sports area of Fiescheralp. You need to leave the village in the direction of Bettmeralp.
  • The main route to Bettmeralp continues straight on just outside the village, but it is more fun to take an alternative path. This path is a bit more difficult. You need to follow the sign to the Bettmerhorn. Keep to the left from now on so that you will not walk to the Bettmerhorn. A small lake shows up as you stand on a hill.
  • After a short descent, you will pass the lake on its left bank. You will cross a gondola lift route and afterward, there are several trails to get back to the main path to Bettmeralp.
  • Then you enter the winter sports village of Bettmeralp. Keep following the main road. The bare landscape makes room for woods as you arrive at your final destination Riederalp.
