    Dear myswissalps members,

I have a map of Lavaux region(attached below), but how will I come to know which is the trail to be followed while on foot..I checked the Google street view, but it showed the road on which cars go, is it the same to be used for walking too?

    Hello Jatinsmehta,

Nice to hear you’re coming along to explore the Lavaux area on the Lake of Geneva.

Yes, the hikes through the vineyards normally are on concrete paths, so paths that can also be used by cars, whereas there is normally no regular trafic on these roads, mainly people working on the vineyards.

I hope this answers your question.
Btw, fantastic map you attached, I hope you’re fine with me saving it for later occasions?

    Hello Steph,

Please use the map for your future references, i would be delighted that I could be of any help.

I spoke to the Lavaux tourism officer who recommended doing Cully to St.Saphorin, do you have clue about this route?

My main query is which ever route I hike, will it be clearly marked or I need to walk on the road which is used by cars?

    Hi Jatinsmehta,

I’ve done the one that Steph suggested, but I am sure your suggestion is wonderful too (it overlaps a bit with the other one). All the way is clearly marked with the signs you can see in your brochure (“Terrasses de Lavaux”). It’s on roads or paths with little or no traffic, or pedestrian paths.

    Hi Arno,

Since you have done it, would you advice me doing it early in the morning (8 am to 10 am) or late in the evening (5 pm to 7 pm)..I’ll be visiting the region on 11th Aug 2019.

    Hi Jatinsmehta,

That’s a personal preference, but I prefer earlier over later, especially on a warm day (not much shade there).

I’ll be doing it later in the day but in September. Prefer to have the sun behind me but hopefully it will be cooler then. 😉

Thanks Arno, August will be indeed a warm day.

Rockoyster : To have sun behind me, I’ve planned to do it from St.Saphorin to Cully, what do you think about it?
    Thanks

Hi jatinshmehta. What type of water fountain do you mean? You’ll find some public fountains with fresh water in the towns along the route, if that’s what you’re looking for.

    Hi Annika,
Yes, that’s what I meant as I would need to refill my bottle along the way, I’m sure it would be a hour summer day.

Right, I see. You’ll very probably pass by some water fountains. Just make sure you carry along water to begin with though. In case of drought or other (unexpected) circumstances fountains may not work, so don’t count on them too much.

    Thanks Annika,

Would be there be grapes on the trees in the vineyards in the 2nd week of August?

If you happen to encounter a farmer there and he or she allows you to do so, then that’s fine. But it won’t be appreciated if you pluck grapes without asking politely :-).

I did this walk/hike today, meaning I walked from Vevey to Lavaux, getting lost along the way. Even with Google Maps open, which I would highly advise using.

Yes – the roads are also hiking routes. When you hear a car coming, from either direction, keep walking but work to make eye contact so they see you. There are yellow triangle “Tourist” signs telling you that you’re on the right track, even if it’s a road – in fact, here, it’s always also a road.

I would advise either: 1) starting at “lake level” and remaining there, or 2) starting at the top of the mountain/hill and working your way down. It’s extremely hilly and August will be hot; today was quite comfortable but still strenuous.

Drinking water: there were many fountains however had a few “not potable” signs…so I filled up where ever I didn’t see a posting, and am still here to talk about it.

Thanks Annika, will keep your suggestion in mind.

Doveswiss : Thanks for your inputs, I would prefer to start from Mountains to get a better view of the lake & the vineyards….Hope St.Saphorin to Cully meets my needs.

This topo map will give you exact altitudes:

    map.geo.admin.ch/?topic=swisstopo&lang=e n&bgLayer=ch.swisstopo .pixelkarte-farbe&catalogNodes=139 2,1538,1396,1430,1436& layers=ch.swisstopo.sw isstlm3d-wanderwege&E=2550476.0 5&N=1147258.51&zoom=10

Scroll to the left for Cully.

You can decide whether you will be on a mountain…I consider it a steep slope up from the lake.

The map you posted is excellent for finding your way and a general overview, but neither it nor Google Maps provide altitudes.

That SwissTopo map shows trails with the official color codes as described here:http://www.schweizmobil.ch/en /hiking-in-switzerland/more-wl/hiking-trail-network-and-signalization.html
