Hi folks! This is my first post, but this site has been a goldmine of information while I plan my trip. I am planning a mother daughter trip with my mom late November (I didn’t see until after I booked that this was probably not the best month…but we’ll make the best out of it!) Our trip includes some other euro regional travel. Right now, I am debating between the eurail pass, swiss travel, and half fare.

I made the attached spreadsheet based on my research but I am wondering if someone who is more intimately familiar with the passes would mind double checking my calculations. I have a lot packed into this trip. It seems like half fare card still comes out the winner which didn’t exactly seem right to me…hence this post. One additional question I have is if the total difference isn’t too crazy between the full and half swiss cards do you think I should get full one to cover any sporadic travel?

Hi Jan and welcome to MySwissAlps,

You have a couple of minor discrepancies but nothing that makes a material difference to the result.

Chillon Castle is not discounted with the SHFC: https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisshalffarecar d/validity

Anything in the Jungfrau Region south of Interlaken is only discounted 25% not 50% with Eurail: https://www.myswissalp s.com/eurailglobalpass /validity.

Eurail won’t get you anything off Rothorn.

I think the price advantage argues in favour of the SHFC.

By far the best way to check timetables, find fares* and buy tickets on-line if required is using the SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi). In the unlikely event you don’t have a device capable of running the app then you can use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B). If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions at http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

* The SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, the mobile app allows you to nominate whether to show full or half-fares (by editing the passenger details in settings) and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass) if that offers the best fare. The app also show a platform map (at least at the larger stations) to help you make conections.

Regarding your question about the Swiss Half Fare Card and the Swiss Travel Pass (the half and full card, as you call them), you will be able to travel flexibly with any of the two cards, just that on regular routes you can just hop on board of the train if you hold the Swiss Travel Pass (full) and if you hold the Swiss Half Fare Card you will need to purchase tickets before boarding the train.
