Hello Jasper89 and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

The Swiss Travel Pass will only cover the part of your journey from the Swiss Border (normally Basel from Lyon) to Lucerne.

You will need a ticket from Lyon to Basel. This might help http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/france.

    Hi Jasper89 and Rockoyster,

Would it not be better to buy a ticket from Lyon to Geneva ? Seems to me Geneva is closer to Lyon than is Basel. From Geneva there are a number of interesting routes, all covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, first along the shore of the Léman, and then perhaps from Montreux to Interlaken and on to Lucerne.

The Basel route is slightly quicker but your point is well made.

I guess it depends what other plans Jasper has for within Switzerland.

And the Lyon to Geneva (Genève en français) ticket will be less expensive than the Lyon to Basel (Bâle en français).

    Thank you Peterli.

It has given me two options now that you mentioned it. We have not been to Basel and because of long journey it may be wise to break the journey and travel via Geneva for the quickest way to Lucerne. We will visit Basel when time permits and we believe it is an interesting place too.

Thank you once again. Much appreciate your advice.

If you are going via Geneva you would want to consider the Golden Pass Line (http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass) which is I think what Peterlii implied when he said Montreux to Interlaken.

Exactement ! 😊 In fact, the entire route from Geneva to Lucerne via Montreux and Interlaken is wonderful and a photographer’s delight. For starters, I suggest you sit on the ride side of the train for the leg between Geneva and Montreux.
