Yes, I would look at taking either the Gold Pass route to Montreux or the Gotthard Panoramic Express train to Lugano (with a boat trip included on Lake Luzern).
On your return it would probably make more sense to take a ‘regular’ regional train as it would be faster so the trip doesn’t take literally the entire day 🙂 You can find train schedules to plan your trips here.

Is the gotthard panoramic express different than the regional 2 hour train between the 2 cities. We took that regional train to get here but it did not seem as panoramic as I thought, so the train route might be different.
thank you!

Are you referring to a trip between Lugano and Luzern?
The fastest route between those two places, and the route the SBB timetable will bring up by default, goes through the very long Gotthard-Basistunnel and misses most of the good scenery.
The map attached below shows a blue arrow pointing towards the Gotthard Panorama Express train route between Flüelen and Bellinzona, with lots of twists, turns and loops (required to get up and down mountains). (The Gotthard Panorama Express route also incorporates a beautiful boat ride between Luzern and Flüelen.)
The red arrow points towards the Gotthard-Basistunnel, going in a fairly straight line underneath the mountains.
