    Hi everyone,

Hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy. Our May river cruise in France has been cancelled by Viking and so were our flights. We were going to visit Switzerland after our river cruise but now we are planning on visiting after our river cruise June 2021.

Our trip for this year had included one night in Montreux, two nights in Wengen and 2 nights in Zurich where we will fly home from after our 7 day river cruise in May 2021. There are 6 adults and we were planning to visit Jungfraujoch. We will not have boots but will be wearing gym shoes. Is that feasible or should I change that part of the itinerary since we are starting from the beginning again. The only hotel in Switzerland that has not let us cancel our rooms and get a refund is Arenas in Wengen. They want to give us a credit up to May 2021 but we cannot get there until June 2021. Does anyone know when the hotels will open for tourists in Switzerland. We planned on being in Wengen June 1 , 2 and out June 3, 2020.

Actually, we have two years to book another river cruise so if any of you think we should visit at another time of the year, please let me know. We are interested in sightseeing and visiting villages.

    Looking forward to your suggestions.

    Thank you.

    Phyllis

    Hi Phyllis-

<<“We planned on being in Wengen June 1 , 2 and out June 3, 2020.”>>

If you stick with those dates, you will be about 3 weeks to0 early for a full re-opening of the region, including some beautiful trails, such as this very easy one:

    Images attached.

I often visit Switzerland in late May and early June, but I stay at lower altittudes and enjoy Speing.

For the high Alps, …after mid-June , and , especially, in September. On average, the best weather.

Hi Phyllis! I’m sorry to hear that you had to reschedule your trip, and that you weren’t able to get a full refund from your hotel in Wengen. Their offer for a credit until May 2021 sounds reasonable, but it’s too bad you won’t be able to use it by then. You may try to contact Wengen Tourism for further assistance. I’m not sure if they can help you out, but it’s worth a try.

As for traveling in June: I think that’s a fantastic season. You’ll be able to avoid summer crowds, and nature in general is usually more fresh and green, with more snow on the mountain tops, than in July-September. Pretty much all cable cars and other mountain transportation (http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/naturalsites/mountains) will be running by then. The main limitation is that high-altitude hikes (http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking) won’t be possible yet, but if that’s not your main goal, I think you’ll be just fine. You can read about the pros and cons of each month here: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit.

You asked when hotels would open. Do you mean hotel re-opening in the current corona situation, or would you like to know when hotels generally open for the spring/summer season? Under normal circumstances, lots of hotels will be open by early June, and many of them even earlier. Quite some can be booked all year long. You’ll find our selection at http://www.myswissalps.com/hotels. As for the current season: we don’t know yet when traveling to and staying in Switzerland will be possible again for foreign travelers. Up-to-date information can be found in http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/does-the-corona-virus-affect-trips-to-switzerland.

In most cases gym shoes or sneakers should be sufficient for a Jungfraujoch visit (http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch), especially during spring and summer days. You can get out in the snow there though, so it’s comfortable if they’re water proof and have some kind of grip profile. Thicker socks may help to prevent cold feet.

Please let us know if you have any further questions about your new trip. We’re happy to help you out.

As noted in my earlier post, by late Jun those trails are normally open, including this one:

Yes, by late June most of them will be. By early June (planned travel dates for this year’s trip were early June) probably not yet. Anyhow, Phyllis: there’s more than enough to enjoy yourselves with during this month and you definitely won’t get bored!
