Getting to and from your Basel hotel

Most hotels are situated very close to the city center and Basel SBB, the main rail station. That way you can easily get around on foot.

The hotels provide a free BaselCard when you check in. You can use this for the urban buses and trams. If you want to make trips away from the city, look into the Swiss rail passes.

Where to stay in Basel

Directly near the rail station

Immediate access to the main train station is convenient. Trams and buses to all districts of Basel depart there, as well as trains to other Swiss towns. Several hotels are located on the “Centralbahnplatz” opposite the rail station.

In the old town of Basel

The old town of Basel is north of the rail station. You can reach it on foot in about 20 minutes. But there are frequent bus and tram connections too. Count on an 8- to 15-minute ride from your hotel in the old town to the train station.

In the “Kleinstadt” district

The “Kleinstadt” district is on the north-eastern side of the Rhine. It takes a few minutes longer to reach the town center and the rail station. But in many cases, you’ll have great views of the river boulevard, the Rhine and Basel’s center with the Münster Cathedral.

Smaller towns near Basel

On the river Rhine

If you prefer not to stay within the city, I suggest looking into Rheinfelden. It’s a lovely town with a historic center on the river Rhine, and just 15 minutes by train from Basel.

Another village on the same train line is Kaiseraugst. It’s even closer to Basel, and features the Roman archeological site “Augusta Raurica”.

Between Kaiseraugst and Basel, you’ll find Muttenz and Pratteln. Both have quick connections to Basel and are on the Rhine, but I feel they’re less scenic.

South of Basel

There are many other suburbs and towns in the rural area south of Basel you can consider. Examples are Liestal, Münchenstein, Arlesheim (with its castle and beautiful English landscape garden), Dornach, and Aesch.
