Free Lausanne Transport Card

If you book a hotel, you will receive a free Lausanne Transport Card when you check-in. During your stay, it grants free access to all public transport in and around Lausanne, plus discounts on local activities.

Check the rail passes if you need better discounts. A rail pass is also better if you prefer unlimited public transport in a wider region, or even in all of Switzerland.

Where to stay in Lausanne

Lausanne is built on the slopes of Lake Geneva. The rail station and historical town center are at a higher altitude than the lake and boat stop. Book a hotel close to the rail station for the quickest access to all sorts of day trips.

The lower district “Ouchy” on the lake is well-connected to the rail station and town center by a direct tram. If you plan to make boat trips, prioritize lake views, and don’t mind an additional ride to the main station, you can book a hotel on the lakeshore.

Small towns near Lausanne

There are plenty of scenic villages near Lausanne, from which you can conveniently reach the city by train. Due to the size of these towns, accommodation isn’t as widely available as in Lausanne, but there are usually at least one or two hotels.

Pully, Lutry, and Villette are small towns south-east of Lausanne. They’re on the lake, right within the Lauvaux wine-growing region, and have train stations on the railway line connecting Geneva, Lausanne, and Montreux.

Charming towns in the same area are Grandvaux, Puidoux, Chêxbres, and Corseaux. They too offer rail connections to Lausanne in the west and Montreux in the east. The villages are perched a bit higher up in the hills, making for grand views over the lake. They’re on the train line between Vevey and Lausanne.

Directly west of Lausanne, the town of Morges is worth your consideration. It’s just 10 to 15 minutes by train from Lausanne, and considerably smaller than the city.

I spent many summers in the Bernese Oberland, which still feels like my second home, and then started to explore other areas. Traveling, hiking and photographing in the Swiss Alps are my absolute favorite activities.
