I like this blog.  Really helpful comments from the community.  My wife and I are traveling up from Milan on September 3rd.   As we are getting closer to our trip, I just wanted to touch base  (Rodger jump in if you see this :)-) and ensure that I have taken the correct steps for train travel in Switzerland.

I have purchased two Saver passes for both of us (round trip).  I understand that the passes allow us to jump on/off regional trains and understood that I’ll need to purchase additional tickets to get where the Swiss trains begin and end in Italy.  I’m just not understanding the Swiss train system well.

I have the SBB app.  And the only planned trip in the App is our itinerary travel from Wengen to Milan.  It’s been a while since I went into the app, and it is throwing me off as to why my travel itinerary from Milan to Wengen is not also in the app.  The only two charges pertaining to SBB is the Saver passes for September 3rd and our return on September 4th.  Can anyone speculate on what may have happened?

    Hello again Patrick

(I am afraid I cannot help you with your App problem.)

    Milan to Wengen 3rd September

In my reply 10 to your previous thread I wrote ‘It appears that trains on the Simplon line via Domodossola and Brig will still be affected by engineering work in September.’

    https://www.myswissalps.com/community/thread/overnight-in-wengen/

It is now clear that there is extensive engineering work in September on the Simplon Line.  The schedules I gave in my reply 14 of your previous thread are not valid

Basically you now have three options

    Option A

This has two advantages.  There is no need for any seat reservations.  Cheap Italian Regional Train fares apply for the Milan to Domodossola leg of your journey.

Leave Milano Centrale on the 08 25 regional train bound for Domodossola, arriving there at 10 05.

Leave Domodossola at 11 20 on a rail replacement bus bound for Isella di Trasquera, arriving there at 11 45.

Leave Isella di Trasquera at 12 16 on the RE1 train bound for Bern via Kandersteg.  Get off at Spiez at 13 44.

    14 06 RE9 train from Spiez to Interlaken Ost arrive 14 26

    14 34  R62 train to Lauterbrunnen, arrive 14 56

15 00 CC63 train bound for Kleine Scheidegg.  Get off at Wengen at 15 11.

Options B and C both involve your travelling on Eurocity (EC) trains from Milan.  Two disadvantages.  Seat Reservation is compulsory.  The Milan to Domodossola Italian fares will be much higher

    Option B

07 10 EC train from Milano Centrale bound for Basel.  You get off at Brig at 09 16.

From Brig,  09 36 RE1 bound for Bern via Kandersteg.  You get off at Spiez at 10 44

    11 05 IC61 to Interlaken Ost, arrive there 11 28.

    11 34 R62 train to Lauterbrunnen, arrive 11 56.

12 00 CC63 train bound for Kleine Scheidegg.  Get off at Wengen at 12 11.

    Option C

08 10 EC train from Milano Centrale bound for Geneva.  You get off at Brig at 10 14

From Brig,  10 36 RE1 bound for Bern via Kandersteg.  You get off at Spiez at 11 44

    12 06 RE9 to Interlaken Ost, arrive there 12 26.

    12 34 R62 train to Lauterbrunnen, arrive 12 56.

1300 CC63 train bound for Kleine Scheidegg.  Get off at Wengen at 13 11.

    Wengen to Milan 4th September

Follow the itinerary set out in my reply 2 to your previous thread under the heading A scenic route comfortably doable in one day.

Remember that you will need Italian regional tickets for the 51 kilometres from Chiasso to Milan.

    Kind regards

    Hi Hopper!

Sorry to hear you’re not a fan of the SBB app. The SBB website may be easier to use, although I understand you prefer the mobile app while you’re traveling.

In any case, your planned journey Milan-Wengen isn’t in any way tied or linked to the Saver Day Passes you bought. Your passes grant free train travel throughout Switzerland on any route, not just on the Swiss leg of your planned route to Wengen.

Nor does the app automatically save the connections you’ve been looking into. It will only do so if you choose a specific connection, and then tap the ” star” icon. The connection will then be saved to your “Trips” section, so you can quickly return to it.

Our Swiss timetable guide and video tutorials at https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/train/timetable/ may be of help. And here’s the SBB’s own information about the timetable app https://www.sbb.ch/en/travel-information/apps/sbb-mobile/functions.html

    I hope this helps!

    Roger,
Thank you for doing this.  You spent alot of time doing the itinerary for me that would have taken me forever.  I’m going with the first option.  We have the Wengen to Milan “option 2” in place on our itinerary.  I’ll transfer your update on our trip to Wengen transferred over to our itinerary as well.

Again, can’t thank you enough for your help in making this a trip we will remember.  Now, all we need is for Mother Nature to provide clear viewing.  Haha.

    Regards,
    Patrick

    Annika,
Thank you for clearing up the issues I was having with understanding the app.  I will view the link you included.  At least I’m tackling these issues with plenty of time to spare.

    Again, thank you,

    Patrick
