Discounts

  • The standard adult fare applies to all travelers from 25 years old.
  • A 30% discount applies if you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card at the time of traveling. Your Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card must be valid during the entire validity period of the Berner Oberland Pass. This discount also applies to Swiss Travel Pass Flex holders, but only if a travel day of the Swiss Travel Pass Flex is used on all days of the Berner Oberland Pass. That’s why I don’t recommend the combination of a Swiss Travel Pass Flex and a Berner Oberland Pass.
  • The same 30% discount applies to children and youths from 16 up to and including 24 years old.
  • Children from 6 up to and including 15 years old can get a Berner Oberland Pass at a flat rate of CHF 30. That allows them to travel along for free with an adult with a Berner Oberland Pass. This even applies to routes where adults just get a discount (a few exceptions may apply). The adult does not need to be family. School and scout groups can’t take advantage of the flat rate. You don’t have to get the flat-rate children’s pass if you already possess a Junior Travelcard, Children’s Co-travelcard or Swiss Family Card.
  • Children up to 5 travel along for free. They don’t need a pass.
  • There is no senior discount.

Is a 1st-class Berner Oberland Pass worth it?

The Berner Oberland Pass is available in 1st class too. Prices are about 30% higher than 2nd class. 1st class is worth it for train and boat rides in the Bernese Oberland in high season (June-September).

However, most mountain trains and cable cars offer 2nd class only, and a 1st-class pass won’t give you any benefits on those routes.

Adding 2 days to your Berner Oberland Pass

While traveling, you can add 2 extra days to your Berner Oberland Pass. This is not possible online. Go to a manned train station desk in the Bernese Oberland. This addition is discounted for Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card holders, and for youths.

Here’s what 2 extra days cost:

  • 2nd class: CHF 72 (normal fare) / CHF 60 (discounted)
  • 1st class: CHF 85 (normal fare) / CHF 70 (discounted)

Berner Oberland Pass FAQs before you buy

  1. What’s the official webshop for the Berner Oberland Pass?

The official SBB tourist webshop is owned by the Swiss Federal Railways. There are many other legitimate shops too.

  2. Can I get a discount on the Berner Oberland Pass?

Yes, you will get a discount if you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card while you travel with your Berner Oberland Pass. Travelers up to 24 years old pay a lower price, too.

Additional promotions are rare. If there is one, you’ll find it here. Or, subscribe to the MySwissAlps newsletter and we’ll e-mail you when there is a discount code or other promotion.

  3. Is there a discount for buying early?

No, there are no lower rates if you buy early.

  4. Can I buy the Berner Oberland Pass in Switzerland?

Yes, you can. But I recommend buying online via the official shop. You’ll receive your passes via e-mail in minutes.

Avoid buying at the station if you can. You’d need to go to a staffed ticket counter during opening hours and bring the passports of all travelers. It takes time to get this done, especially at busy stations like Zurich Airport, Bern, Interlaken, and Lucerne. You’ll receive paper passes. There is no replacement if you lose or damage them.

It’s best to buy online before you leave. That way, you can hop on your first train right after you arrive in the Bernese Oberland. No time lost, and no risk of losing your passes.

  5. Can I cancel the Berner Oberland Pass and get a refund?

Yes, almost all webshops allow you to cancel before the first travel day. You will get a refund. There are always some costs involved: either when you cancel, or you pay a small fee when you buy, which allows you to cancel for free.

To prevent costs, you can best buy your pass a few days before your trip, and minimize your risk of having to cancel.

Page author: ArnoI have visited Switzerland countless times since 1997. I've explored most of the country, but find myself staying in the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden most frequently. The alps and the rail network remain very impressive, even after all these years.
