Swiss Half Fare Card FAQs before you buy

  1. What’s the official webshop to buy the Swiss Half Fare Card from?

The official SBB tourist webshop is owned by the Swiss Federal Railways. There are many other legitimate shops too.

  2. Can I get a discount on the Swiss Half Fare Card?

Children up to 15 travel for free. There is no senior, youth, or group discount.

Additional promotions are very rare. If there is one, you’ll find it here on this page. Or subscribe to the MySwissAlps newsletter to get notified.

  3. Who can buy the Swiss Half Fare Card?

The Swiss Half Fare Card can be purchased by anyone, except for residents of Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

  4. Is it cheaper to buy the Swiss Half Fare Card in advance?

No, there are no lower rates for buying early.

  5. Can I buy the Swiss Half Fare Card on arrival in Switzerland?

Yes, you can buy it in Switzerland. But I recommend doing it online via the official shop. You’ll receive your cards via e-mail in minutes.

Avoid buying at the station if you can. You’d need to go to a staffed ticket counter during opening hours and bring the passports of all travelers. It takes time to get this done, especially at a busy station like the airport or in major cities like Zurich. Plus: you’ll receive paper Swiss Half Fare Cards. There is no replacement if you lose or damage them.

It’s best to buy online before you leave. The discounted tickets can be purchased online too, or from a ticketing machine. That way, you can quickly hop on your first train right after you arrive. No waiting, and no risk of losing your cards.

Learn more about buying discounted tickets here.

  6. What start date do I need to choose when I buy the Swiss Half Fare Card?

The Swiss Half Fare Card is valid for one month. For example: from July 23 through August 22. You can best select your arrival day in Switzerland as the start date. Most people do not use the card for the full period of validity.

  7. Can I cancel the Swiss Half Fare Card and get a refund?

Yes, almost all webshops allow you to cancel before the start date of your Swiss Half Fare Card. You will get a refund. There are always some costs involved: either when you cancel, or you pay a fee when you buy, which allows you to cancel for free.

To prevent costs, you can buy your Swiss Half Fare Card a few days before your trip, and minimize your chances of having to cancel.
