Bernina Express – Tirano to Pontresina

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a day trip this month from Tirano to Pontresina to ride the cable car at Diavolezza. They want to know whether panoramic windows are available only on the direct BEX train or also on regular trains that stop at Pontresina. They are looking for clarity on train options and ticket booking.

Key takeaways:
  • Some modern regular trains on the Bernina line have panoramic windows, but the Bernina Express has larger windows and allows you to hop on and off, though separate seat reservations are required.
  • For winter trips, the Bernina Panorama Winter train operates between St. Moritz and Tirano and stops at Diavolezza; reservations are recommended.
  • If you choose a regional train, it will also offer great views even if it lacks panoramic features.

    Hello everyone!

We are taking a daytrip from Tirano to Pontresina to ride the cable car at Diavolezza this month. We would like to ride the train with panoramic windows – is this only available on the direct BEX from Tirano to St. Moritz? Or is it also available on the “regular” trains that would allow us to stop at Pontresina? I’m trying to find the info online and am a bit confused.

    Thanks!

    Hi Jnh612,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Some of the modern regular trains running along the Bernina line between Tirano and Pontresina/St. Moritz have panoramic windows. The older ones have windows that can be opened. The panoramic Bernina Express trains have extra-large windows and you can certainly hop and off as you wish. However you do need to make separate seat reservations if you decide to break your journey.

I hope this answers your question.

    Regards,

    Anna

I am concerned that you might have misunderstood the geography, so please correct me if I am not correct. The Diavolezza cable car starts from Bernina Diavolezza station, which is not at Pontresina, but high up on the summit section of the Bernina railway. Only the ‘local’ Tirano – St Moritz Bernina Express services stop at Diavolezza, not the long distance Bernina Express trains to Chur.

I travelled the Bernina railway many years ago long before the advent of ‘panoramic’ window trains and the views were still spectacular, so don’t worry too much if you have to get one of the regional ‘ordinary’ trains – all RhB train coaches have large windows anyway.

Hi, yes, I am most likely confused on my geography! First time going to Switzerland. We do not plan on going to Chur – Tirana to the cable car and back. If I’m understanding you correctly, we would talk the local train, not the express. I just want to make sure when I book the tickets that I’m choosing the correct one.

    I appreciate your help!

    Hi Jnh612,

In winter, the Rhaetian Railway operates the Bernina Panorama Winter train from St Moritz to Tirano which stops in Diavolezza. These are special panoramic cars that run in combination with regular trains and reservations are recommended. You can find more details here: http://www.rhb.ch/en/panoramic-trains/bernina-panorama-winter

Thank you, all, for the help!

We are still debating whether our few free hours would be better spent at Diavolezza or just wandering St. Moritz. But at least we know how to get there now!
