The pros of booking a Glacier Express tour package
1. It’s easy
Most packages contain all you need. So you don’t have to worry about getting your Glacier Express reservations in time, finding a hotel near the train station, buying a ticket or pass, et cetera. You’ll arrange for all of this with just one booking. And you’ll have just one convenient point of contact for your questions.
2. You may be able to get seats you wouldn’t get otherwise
Individual customers can make Glacier Express seat reservations 3 months before their travel date. But some tour operators can book seats earlier than that. This means that you may be able to get hold of a Glacier Express package earlier than 3 months ahead. That’s handy: the Glacier Express is a popular route and seats can sell out quickly.
Also, if you travel with a group, tour operators can make sure that everyone is seated together.
3. It’s often flexible and customizable
In many cases, you can customize your Glacier Express package by choosing from several or even many hotels. Or you can extend the trip with additional nights in St. Moritz, Zermatt, or other towns.
In some cases, you can even add all sorts of extra excursions. An example is a trip up to Gornergrat on the day before or after your Glacier Express train ride. Likewise, you can add lots of train journeys, mountain trips, and so on. This allows you to create a customized itinerary and arrange for all of your bookings in just one package, with just one vendor.
If you prefer a 100% customizable offer instead, there are other more suitable options. Please find fully tailor-made packages here.
The cons of getting a Glacier Express tour package
1. It’s less flexible than arranging for your own bookings
In some cases, the choice of hotels is limited or the itinerary is fixed. But that’s not a given. Some packages are customizable to a very high degree. So I recommend browsing our list of packages: some may fit your needs right away, others may allow you to make the desired changes.
2. You’re more weather-dependent in case of additional (mountain) excursions
If you book excursion tickets as a part of your package, it’s good to realize that these are usually valid for one specific date, regardless of the weather. If buy your own tickets, you can wait and see how the weather turns out. Once forecasts are favorable, you can make your ticket purchase – online and very quickly in most cases.
Note that this date- and weather dependency goes for the Glacier Express ride anyway, whether you buy a package or book your own seats. In both cases, you can best book well in advance and you won’t know what the weather will be like.
3. It may not be suitable if you’ve already bought a rail pass
Packages include the costs for a Glacier Express train ticket. But if you already have a ticket or rail pass that’s valid for the Glacier Express journey, this entitles you to a free or discounted trip. Getting a package in such cases would mean you’d make a redundant, double payment.
