My wife and I intend to travel from Interlaken to Mulhouse, France in August using SBB and SNCF. We believe that we cross the border at Basel Station.

Is this correct and how much time should we allow for our connection?

Hi MikeandSue and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Yes, you will change trains in Basel on this route. You can search the SBB timetable here and it will give you departure options for your travel date and connection times at Basel so you know where to go (track #) and how long you will have to do so. They won’t give you a connection that is impossible to make…could be 5 minutes or could be 20 depending on how far you must walk to next train.

    Thanks Lucas

Unfortunately you have addressed only SBB trains. We plan to change to SNCF train to Mulhouse. So the questions remain; Do we pass through the Swiss/French border at the Basel Station and if so, are the formalities lengthy for a non-European (Australian) so that we should allow additional connection time?

No border stops anywhere now. You are in the Schengen Zone in Switzerland already so there are only random passport checks on the trains themselves.

The timetable I linked above will give you connection options for all trains at the station – not just Swiss trains. You will almost certainly be connecting on to a French train.

Thank you Lucas, that’s good news.
