I am wondering if you can get combined ski hire and lift pass discounts, or also can you get a family lift pass and does it work out cheaper

Yes, often you can combine ski equipment rental with your ski tickets, but it depends on the mountain you are visiting (or the shops you will rent from).
Each ski resort/mountain would have its own website, like wengen.ch or http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/wengen/ or http://www.jungfrau.ch/shop/e n/skipass or a shop like Intersport– which can give you rental and ticket details.
