Hi mrsl,
There are two popular routes to Rigi, described here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi
Depending on which one you take, you’ll need a ticket (I’m assuming you don’t have a rail pass) from Lucerne to Vitznau, Arth Goldau, or Weggis (and return).

Did you read about the options at http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi/gettingthere?
There are several permutations for going up and coming down. When you get to Vitznau or Weggis or Arth Goldhau show your Saver Day Pass at the Rigi Bahn ticket office the get a free ticket.

The two railways up the Rigi start from Vitznau (VRB – red trains) and Arth Goldau (ARB – blue trains). They meet near the top and run parallel to the summit station.
You take a lake steamer from Luzern to Vitznau and the VRB station is next to the boat landing stage.
To get to Arth Goldau you take a regional or express train from Luzern to Arth Goldau and change to the ARB.
The best day trip is to go one way and come back the other

Hi Mrsl,
A day ticket from the Mt. Rigi Railways allows unlimited traveling on the routes you mentioned in your first post. A Saver Day Pass is something different and covers the whole country. In your case validity starts in Vitznau (train), Weggis (cable car) or Arth-Goldau (train). It’s up to you where you’d like to start and where you go next, it is not a scheduled excursion but unlimited traveling.
Have fun!
